LIFEGUARDS
New lifeguards are being hired for the 2012 season.  So far we have 2 new regular/full time guards: Colin Adkins and Devin Weber and one fill in guard Morgan Stephens.  Also Erica Coleman and Ben Chiles will be back this season to guard. They have all completed their certification courses and are up to date on all of the latest safety information from the Red Cross. We look forward to having them this year at the pool. WELCOME LIFEGUARDS!

CONSTRUCTION
If you have walked by the pool lately, you have likely noticed major construction and renovations are going on!  All of the old concrete has been successfully removed.  We are saying goodbye to the cracked, uneven faulty concrete deck that has served well since the 1960's.  Stay tuned as the new concrete deck will be in place in time for the 2012 pool season!  We are always needing helping hands-as the new concrete goes down- just endless little jobs as we prepare for this exciting new improvement for our community pool. Phase 2 of our Spring Renovation Project has continued in spite of the rain. It has consisted mostly of digging holes and looking at plumbing and electrical lines. Not the most exciting of things, but its work that must be done before the new concrete goes down, hopefully, beginning sometime next week.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS
Applications will be out at the end of this week for you to fill out and return so you can join the pool.  We also permit non Guyan Estates Residents to the same privileges of our pool & community building so let us know and we will get you an application!  Applications available May 4th.  If you are a Guyan Estates Resident-flyers will appear on your doorstep soon!  Or come by the hot dog sale to pick up an application.

Letter to Community Spring Projects

Guyan Estates Swim Club, Inc.
254 Bartow Drive
Barboursville, WV 25504                                                                                            geswimclub@gmail.com

April 2, 2012
Dear Friends and Neighbors of the Guyan Estates Pool,

We wish to extend our sincerest thanks to the people and businesses that have given us their support these last two years. The response to our efforts to take care of long-standing maintenance and repair issues at the pool, community building and on the grounds has been outstanding. With your help, we have been able to accomplish many things, including:

Added new siding, gutters, paint and central air to the building.

Updated both bathrooms and the kitchen in the building.

Cut back and cleared trees that were in danger of falling on the building.

Repaired the concession stand floor.

Replaced the baby pool pump and filters.

And much, much more!

We are planning to take care of more things this year, but we need your help to do it!

The Guyan Estates Pool has been a gathering place for family and friends to stay cool, get some exercise and have fun since the 1960’s. Many of our volunteers – and probably many of you – have spent a lot of happy summers there. The pool is a valuable asset to our community and especially, our kids, families, and seniors. Additionally, having acommunity pool can make a difference to families looking to move to our neighborhood.

This past March, the Swim Club Board of Directors held a meeting andput together the list of fixes and repairs that need to be addressed at the pool this year. The estimated cost of these repairs is $12,000. That is just for supplies and materials. No labor costs have been factored into that amount. The Swim Club currently has $5223.25, leaving us about $6800 short of the money we need to complete them.

While a few of these fixes and repairs can be taken care of after the pool opens, the majority of them must be completed while the pool is still closed. With summer just around the corner, time is truly of the essence.

Here are a few of the ways you can help us NOW!

Donate Money! We need to come up with quite a bit of money in a short amount of time. Donations in any amount are always welcome and would be greatly appreciated!  (Checks should be made payable to the Guyan Estates Swim Club and mailed to the address at the top of this letter. Or call us. We will pick it up!)

Donate Materials! We have compiled a list of the things we need to complete these repairs. Having some of the supplies and materials donated would cut back on costs and allow us to do more with the money we have.

Donate Your Time! The Swim Club relies entirely on the kindness of others when it comes to getting things accomplished. Volunteers arealways needed. We could especially use some help from certified plumbers, electricians and general contractors this year.

The Board will be meeting again soon to determine which ones can be completed with the funding, materials, volunteers and time we have left.  With a little luck and help from all of you, we hope it will be all of them!

Sincerely,
The Guyan Estates Swim Club Board of Directors

Pool Manager:  Christina @ 304-638-5519

The board recently met in March to get things geared up for the pool season 2012.  Here's a few tidbits of information:

Summer Season 2011

kiddie pool is gated off separate for safety
Free Swim on Memorial Day weekend was a great success. The temperatures pushed 100 degrees so everyone found the pool so refreshing!

Top 10 reasons you should be a part of the G.E. Swim Club

10.  Coolers are welcome...but the concession stand prices can't be beat. They aren't jacked up for high profits. And the kids love the cool snacks!

9.  Many improvements have been made to the grounds-freshly painted pool, remodeled concession stand,  swing sets and play area for the wee-ones, new above ground pump for kiddie pool.

8. The lifeguards are fun, nice, and friendly.  They enforce the rules for a safe pool-they pay attention and love the kids at the same time.
7. The pool is not over crowded.  You can bring your own chairs but there are lots of chairs-sitting and lounge that have been added. There are also colorful picnic tables and umbrellas!

6. Movie Night -on Friday nights for $3 person -swim and watch the movie on the new inflatable movie screen.  Fun friendly environment-popcorn, snacks and concessions for sale too.

7. Diving board fun and this pool (unlike many) allows floats, noodles, toys and  beach balls.

8.  Activities all summer-swim lessons, water aerobics, zumba, kickboxing, teen night (coming soon), movie night and you can rent the pool/community building for your private parties!

9. Community building: remodeled inside and out...functioning kitchen, 2 bathrooms and central A/C is now included! Affordable rental rates.
Memorial Day Weekend

10. COMMUNITY- familiar faces and family oriented...Small, quaint and full of summer fun!

Hot dog Sale Spring 2011

The hot dog sale was a great success!  Thank you to everyone that pitched in and helped serve, prepare, sale and fix a lot of hotdogs.  Thank you to all of the donations.   Profit total: $1895.17!

This is wonderful to start the season out with a little cash to get the pool opened up.  In case you aren't aware of the situation-go back to the first blog entry here and see where this community's pool and building stood financially...then you can see that we have made great strides.

Thank you to the community and to our pool board for making this happen.
Flyers are circulating and membership applications are available. See the margins of this blog for specific contact information.

Spring-so much is happening!

ZUMBA!

Have you been by the community building lately?

We now have central A/C! Both bathrooms are remodeled and functioning-the kitchen works great, the room is awesome providing tables and chairs as well!  Changes & improvements continue to be made all of the time. Thank you community for making this possible. And thank you to our pool board for finding good deals and negotiating with businesses to get the best bang for our buck!

The building is always available for rent -consider it for your next function..baby showers, fitness classes, scout meetings, church gatherings, wedding showers, birthday parties, slumber parties...just a few ideas and possibilities of ideas for use.  We keep the rental prices low. We are not open for profit but simply providing the community with full use of YOUR building! This belongs to Guyan Estates-the pool and community building are terrific assets to your home and neighborhood.  (The building amenities are not just limited to G.E. residents but to anyone interested.)

Breakfast with the Easter Bunny was a great success! A delicious pancake breakfast was served in a beautifully pastel decorated community room.  The Easter bunny was there for pictures and to see all of the kids that came.  We also had a very talented clown present-He made lots of neat balloon creations and provided excellent talent as an artist with face paints.  The morning was a successful benefit as well as an awesome turnout from our community.  Special thanks to many of our local businesses that supported and provided many supplies to help make it a success. And a special thank you to Christina Kish and Erica Coleman for making this all possible.   (more pictures coming soon!)

Clean up day has come and gone.  The pool and community building grounds are cleaned up and being prepared for another fun season of summer fun. Kay's Tree services provided several hours of labor for us trimming trees and repairing geographical problems on the property. They did this without monetary pay as we are negotiating advertising as payment.

Our sincerest thanks go out to the folks at Rich's Hardware on Rt 10 for their recent donations of gloves, cleaning supplies and the use of a pump (to drain the pool), a pressure washer (to clean the pool) and the JLG (to help finish up the siding on the building). Their contribution to our community has been invaluable the last couple of weeks. Thanks guys!

Want to join your community in helping out? We can use donations for the hot dog sale-monetary or supplies for Sat. May 7th at the semi-annual community rummage sale.  This is always our biggest fund raiser so any supplies or person labor or just coming down and purchasing your lunch or buying a pool pass will be a great way to help!

In summary, many of you know that just over a year ago we were on the verge of losing the pool and community building due to unpaid taxes and a multitude of unpaid debts. Today we stand in the green financially-we aren't rich by any means!- but thanks to the community, local businesses and much hard working manpower of the pool board members, neighbors and families here in Guyan Estates, we have been able to make repairs and new purchases and pay debts-giving us not just a valid business license but more importantly a wonderful little community pool and building area that our families and children love.
For any information-if you are interested in serving on the board,  want to send donations of items or monetary, would like to to inquire about applications or services, to rent the building...anything you may need or want...you can email or call:

guyanestates@gmail.com   or call  Christina @  304-638-5519

WE APPRECIATE YOU!

The Spring Hot Dog sale. Last year when we had the hot dog sale many community members pulled together and donated EVERYTHING that we needed to make it a success. EVERYTHING that was made was complete profit. That is our goal again this year. We are asking for donations such as hot dogs, small bags of chips, buns, soda, bottles of water, and aluminum foil. If you decide that you would like to donate buns, those can wait a little closer to the sale. I would gladly store everything else as soon as you would like to bring it by. You can bring it to 214 Nedra Drive or 202 Carper Lane. If you have any questions, please call 304-733-5335 or 304-544-4165. As always, thank you for all of your support. The pools success would not and could not be as wonderful and successful as it has been without the support of all of you!!!!!

What a season!

We have been very busy before closing out this successful year 2010!

Summer Sun Pageant:  This was our 1st annual pageant!  What a great success.  The girls had so much fun dressing up for one night and enjoying a very laid back evening of being beautiful. (Of course they are always beautiful but how neat it was not seeing them in their bathing suits and goggles for a change!)  They looked so gorgeous in their dresses and heels.  We had vendor booths, professional photography, music and a live announcer Chris Rice to tell us a little bit about each girl.  Next year will be just as much fun-come join us! Enter your gal to help support the pool!  Each pageant contestant also enjoyed riding in the Fall fest Parade in Barboursville.  This is open to any girl-she does not have to be a resident of Guyan Estates to Participate.  Total profits (after all expenses: $310)

Labor Day Dog Swim:   We wanted to close out the pool with a  little bit of fun.  The pool went to the dogs for a while.  Did they have fun! Dogs jumping from diving boards and doing the doggie paddle!  We saw dogs chasing their tennis balls and splashing it up having a rip roaring time.  Dogs of all sizes, colors and shapes--we welcomed them to our pool for an evening of 4 legged fun!

Clubhouse Parties:  This is something new we are trying out.  We had a couple of these Clubhouse parties for different age groups.  This is giving us many ideas on things we can do in the future too!  You can rent a D.J for your next birthday party for you or your child.  We also have some fun 80's black light decorations.  Stay tuned for upcoming news on the Community Building turning into a very scary sight on Halloween Weekend for a Clubhouse Halloween Party! It will be SPOOKtacular!

Hot Dog Sale:    Biannually the Guyan Estates Community has a rummage sale throughout the subdivision.  Many houses participate in selling..LOTS of people come and shop!  The Pool Board uses this opportunity to earn money so that we can pay bills through the winter months.  They worked very hard selling hot dogs, snacks and drinks on Saturday October 2nd and raised $1368 in profits! Hooray Guyan Estates Swim Club!  We encourage all residents to not sell baked goods/foods during this time so that we can keep the pool and community building afloat,   Thanks to all of you that donated goods, money and time!

Hershell Marshall and his team continue to get the vinyl siding installed on the community building.  Wow it sure does change things! Have you checked it out lately?  There are also changes going on inside the building.  New vinyl flooring is being installed in the bathrooms & kitchen...details later to come.  Please think of your community-this pool and this building that need continuous maintenance and attention to stay open and supporting to YOUR community.  This is YOURS-lets work together so that we can continue to have these amenities for our subdivision.  Rent the building for your next baby shower or scout meeting.  Rent the pool for your next celebration. USE these wonderful privileges available! Did you know there's also a beautiful park in Guyan Estates to play?  Many of our neighbors worked hard since the 1960's keeping these luxuries within our community. Come and get involved-join the board, volunteer your time, lend a hand or a supply-we'd love to have you!

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR POOL BOARD FOR MAKING THIS ALL HAPPEN! (& their spouses who also donate their time and services too!)

Siding for our building!

We have wonderful guys in our community that are volunteering their time to hang vinyl siding to our community building. They are still working..as they are doing this on the side of their busy lives.

Drive by and check it out! Stay tuned to our emails for work dates or contact Hershel Marshall or Jim McSweeney if you can help out. Thank you fellows for your dedication!
